Used during testing of fire extinguishing systems, the gas was making the sound, that damaged dozens of hard drives.

Data center financial institution ING Bank in Bucharest (Romania) went down for 10 hours as a result of the fire drill. The cause of the incident was a rare phenomenon – dozens of hard drives were damaged because of the too loud sound used during the exercise, an inert gas.

The aim of the exercise was to test the installed in the data center fire suppression systems. As a rule, for fire extinguishing in data centers is used an inert gas, because it has no equipment and chemical exposure only slightly increases the temperature.

The gas is stored in cylinders and, if necessary, with high speed is released from the nozzles evenly distributed about the room. Pressure in the data center of ING Bank was higher than expected, and in the process, sputtering gas made loud sounds exceeding 130 dB. The acoustic wave caused vibration, which disabled the hard drives. Vibration of buildings is transmitted to the head read/write that caused their displacement.
