A team of researchers from the state University of new York at Buffalo have developed a method of extracting data from a 3D printer using a conventional smartphone. To do this, attackers need only to program the built-in sensors of the smartphone to read the sound and electromagnetic waves emanating from a 3D printer during printing.

Placing the smartphone near the device, the scientists were able to read the information on the printing object and use it to create 3D models to a different printer. According to experts, to ensure high recognition accuracy of the shape of the printed object, the smartphone must be in the immediate vicinity of the printer. Placing the phone within 20 cm from the printing machine, the authors were able to provide 94% accuracy of the shape recognition of objects of low complexity, e.g., restrictor for doors. For more complex objects, such as auto parts or medical devices, the accuracy decreased, but did not fall below 90%.

Most of the data (80%) comes from electromagnetic waves, and the rest of the sound. As explained by the experts, smartphones allow you to retrieve sufficient data that compromises the security of confidential information. Using the above method, attackers can easily steal the intellectual property implemented in the printed object.
