Almost 95% of the devices that have USB ports, can not withstand the thermal stress.

Last year, the Russian researcher under the pseudonym Dark_Purple has unveiled a prototype USB-drive USB 2.0 Killer, capable of a few seconds to "roast" almost any device that has a USB port.

Dark_Purple never launched the prototype into production, but did the Chinese developers. In late August of this year a company from Hong Kong has introduced a USB 2.0 Kill, able for a few seconds to destroy hardware any device with USB support.

As the authors of the project, nearly 95% of the devices that have USB ports, can not withstand the thermal stress. It is based on this principle of operation USB 2.0 Kill. When connecting to the device the flash drive to quickly charge and discharge their capacitors, the trigger current (200VDC) via the data bus. This process occurs several times per second, while storage is connected to the USB port.

The manufacturer is positioning the development as a device for testers. According to the developers, the gadget is not designed to destroy data, however, depending on the configuration of the hardware (SSD or Platter HDD) controllers drives can be corrupted so that data retrieval becomes impossible.
