To intercept the transmitted via Wi-Fi network traffic is criminal enough just to be near access points. Services that allow information transmission in the clear, or incorrectly configured encryption on the access points present a risk to users ' data. Researchers from Kaspersky Lab have aimed to test how secure are public wifi network in Moscow.

Experts conducted a small experiment in which we scanned a Wi-Fi network in the centre and one of the districts of the metropolis. Also the audit was conducted in one of the major shopping centres, popular coffee shops located in the city centre five-star hotel and the points of transport infrastructure. In total, we analyzed 7 thousand networks.

The study staff LK has made the following conclusions:

– In 16% of access points in Moscow in General is not implemented encryption.
2% use an unreliable Protocol Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). For hacking such a Protocol the attacker would need only a few minutes;
– 29% of access points used WPA encryption (Wi-Fi Protected Access). However, this Protocol can be compromised if the administrator has set a weak password, which can be selected using the method of brute force;
– In 53% of Wi-Fi networks on the access points used the most resistant to cracking Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2). However, the reliability of such a network again depends on how strong the password is set.

Spot checks also showed interesting results. As it turned out, eight of the Wi-Fi networks, deployed by the operator hundredth of communication in one of the largest shopping malls of Moscow, the traffic is encrypted using the WPA Protocol, in eight - WPA2. However, the experts found two wireless networks that do not involve any encryption, and one of them was used by the visitors of the popular coffee shops.

In a five star hotel the situation was no better. Multiple access points launched there Wi-Fi network traffic is transmitted either in the clear or using legacy WEP.

The most insecure are the access point in the transport infrastructure – railway stations, stops of public transport and in transport (in particular, high speed trains). According to the researchers in most of these networks the data is transmitted without using any encryption.
