On Saturday morning, August 13, several media outlets around the world received an email from a private Swiss organization, which raises funds to support female athletes, and her husband Vitali. As reported in the letter, first, hackers broke into the account of the athletes in the system ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration and Management System), and after a few hours – email. According to WADA, the attackers attacked only account Stepanova, and therefore, they were interested in her whereabouts.

In 2013, the Russian was disqualified for two years for violating anti-doping rules. In December 2014, Stepanov became the main actors of the film by the German broadcaster ARD, told about systematic Russian athletes banned drugs at the insistence of the trainers. Subsequently, an independent Commission, WADA conducted an investigation that led to the disqualification of the all-Russian athletics Federation and Russian non-admission of athletes to participate in the 2016 Olympics.
